Are UK Parking Spaces Still Fit for Purpose?

09/07/25

Let’s be honest — parking a modern car in a standard UK bay feels more like precision surgery than something you should be doing on the school run. Today’s cars are bigger, wider, and heavier than ever before, yet most parking bays in the UK haven’t changed in decades. The result? More dings, more stress, and a serious question about whether our infrastructure is keeping up with the times.

According to the British Parking Association (BPA), the typical UK bay is still just 2.4m wide by 4.8m long — a size designed decades ago. Meanwhile, many popular SUVs and EVs are well over 2 metres wide before you open the doors.

And it’s not just a few outliers. A recent Guardian article revealed that over 1 million cars sold in the UK each year are now too big to fit in a standard space.

Even the AA has weighed in, pointing out that models like the BMW X5 and Audi Q7 barely squeeze in. Sound familiar?

So why does this matter?

Accessibility

Narrow bays make life harder for wheelchair users, parents with young children, and older drivers. A few extra centimetres can make a massive difference.

Damage and driver stress

Dented doors and scratched paint are becoming the norm. Stress levels go up. Experience goes down.
Do you want your customers’ first impression of your business to be stress and frustration?

Environmental trade-offs

Yes, bigger bays might mean fewer total spaces. But smarter layouts, better flow, and reduced circling could actually reduce the overall environmental impact.

So, what’s the fix?

It’s not just about repainting lines.
It’s about rethinking how we manage parking altogether.

That’s where Hozah® AutoPay comes in. No machines. No tickets. No PCNs.

Just a seamless experience that works — especially when space is limited.

If we’re going to reduce total spaces to improve safety and accessibility, the process has to be frictionless for drivers and for operators.

Our cars have changed.
Our parking habits have changed.
Maybe it’s time our bay sizes changed too?

And if you can’t change the bays, change the solution.
